As the autumn leaves begin to scatter, the community gears up for a Thanksgiving tradition that goes beyond turkey and stuffing. The 38th Annual Great Turkey 5K Run & Gobbler 3K Walk is fast approaching, bringing together families, athletes, and local high schools in a vibrant celebration of fitness, community spirit, and giving back. Scheduled to kick off bright and early at Kereiakes Park, with the 3K Walk starting at 7:30 am followed by the 5K Run at 8:00 am, this event promises Thanksgiving-themed fun, complete with door prizes and awards. But it’s not just about who crosses the finish line first; the event serves as the sole fundraiser for the Bowling Green Running Club’s High School Athletics Program, supporting track and cross-country teams across nine counties.
This year’s event aims to provide financial assistance to high schools in Allen, Barren, Butler, Edmonson, Logan, Metcalfe, Ohio, Simpson, and Warren counties. Funds raised will help supply these schools’ track and cross-country clubs with essential items like uniforms and equipment, ensuring that every student-athlete has the opportunity to compete. The Bowling Green Running Club (BGRC) is at the helm of this noble cause, meticulously reviewing applications to distribute funds where they are needed most. With a participant cap set for the safety and enjoyment of all, the event employs a gun start/chip finish system for the 5K Run to streamline the experience. Early packet pickup is highly recommended to beat the race-day rush and ensure a smooth start to the day.
Open Registration
Registration for this cherished community event is open until November 1st, with a fee of $30, after which it increases to $35. Notably, this year’s participant cap is set at 500 runners to ensure a quality experience for all, with 5K runners receiving priority for bibs and walkers encouraged to join without the need for timing chips. The registration packet includes a shirt, guaranteed in your size, if you register by the November 1st deadline. Packet pickups are scheduled for the day before the race at Nat’s Outdoor Sports and on race morning at the Pavilion at Kereiakes Park, ensuring ample opportunity for participants to get ready for the start. Importantly, the event specifies no dogs or strollers in the 5K run to keep the course safe and enjoyable for all runners.
Awards
Awards will be plentiful, with categories spanning across age and skill levels, ensuring that everyone from the fastest sprinters to the most spirited participants gets recognized. Whether you’re aiming for the overall title or competing in your age division, the ceremony at 10:00 am will celebrate the community’s athleticism and generosity. Remember, your bib must be visibly worn to have your time accurately recorded — and for those just cheering on, avoid crossing the finish line to keep results accurate. With a focus on fun, fitness, and community support, the 38th Annual Great Turkey 5K Run & Gobbler 3K Walk is poised to be a Thanksgiving highlight, fostering health and togetherness while supporting the next generation of athletes in Bowling Green and beyond.
